Smoky Ham and Split Pea Soup

Tonight was swim lesson night for Kaspian, so we made a slow cooker recipe of Smoky Ham and Split Pea Soup. It was easy to make and very delicious! The ham just fell apart so no cutting was necessary, it was simply pulled apart and the meat put back into the soup.
Here is the original recipe: http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/smoky-ham-split-pea-soup
Soup with the sour cream!

all ready!
before the addition of the ham pieces

ham hocks

Ingredients:

1.25 pound dried green split peas, rinsed and drained
1 cubed large potato
8 garlic cloves
1 chopped onion
4 stalks chopped celery
2 cups chopped carrot
1 large bay leaf
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1.5 pounds smoked ham hocks
8 cups water
1/2 cup light sour cream for topping

Directions:

1. Layer peas and next 9 ingredients (through ham) in order listed in a slow cooker. Pour 8 cups water over top. Cover and cook on High for 6 hours.
2. Remove ham hocks from slow cooker. Remove meat from bones, and cut into bite-sized pieces; discard skin and bones. Discard bay leaf.
3. Stir in chopped ham.
4. Serve with sour cream on top of the soup.

What we liked:

Easy, good, delicious with the sour cream. This will be a great winter soup recipe. The soup is very filling but the flavor is light. One pot meals are always a plus.

What we didn't like:

Nothing, it was all great.

What Kaspian thought about it:

Not much, he wanted pasta and pepperoni. Though he did eyeball the carrots, he did not want any.

Next time:

No changes, it's great the way it is.
